Heat Safety

It’s getting HOT! Remember to take care of yourself. Below you will find a few tips to help stay cool.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Drink water often and BEFORE you are thirsty. Drink water every 15 minutes, but don’t forget about Electrolytes. Sports drinks or other electrolyte drinks may help to replenish minerals that can be depleted when working in the heat.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Wear your Smiley Uniform- Our uniforms were purposely chosen due to the light weight and breathability of the fabric.
Pack a cool cloth or towel to wet and place on your neck. This can help you keep your body temperature down.

Wear Sunscreen & Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from UV rays by wearing sunglasses. Protect your skin from the sun. A sun protection factor of at least 15 blocks 93 percent of UV rays. Remember to reapply throughout the day.

Know Your Work Surfaces
Remember that surfaces of your crane may be hot from being in the sun. Be careful what you touch without protection.

Recognize the Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion
• Headache, dizziness, or fainting
• Weakness and wet skin
• Irritability or confusion
• Thirst, nausea, or vomiting

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!
Keep the dispatch office in the loop as to your status! Be sure to communicate honestly and clearly. Saying something like, “wow, it’s hot out here” will not convey to dispatch your personal welfare. Instead, saying  “I’m getting overheated” lets the office know that you are struggling in the heat, will allow them to assist you appropriately. If caught early enough, a few extra minutes sitting in the A/C of your truck or a short break may do the trick. We are all a team and good communication is the key to staying safe and efficient.
