The “Cube”

Have you seen The Cube? Our newest machine, the SPYDERCRANE URW703 "Cube" crane was shipped to the US from Furukawa Unic in Japan for ConExpo 2020. Since the delivery and the show, we have had the chance to play with and get to know the features and capabilities of this unique lifting machine. One of our trainers, Chris Trejo has been working on this for a few weeks now, and set up the Cube in the warehouse to see what it can do indoors. The crane is set up very much like a massive 094 SPYDERCRANE. It has 4 outriggers and a seat in the back that swings out for operation. The mini-tower-crane setup gives this SPYDERCRANE a very unique setup that allows for the user to still lift [...]

Instagram Shoutout: Nick Bezates

Instagram Shoutout -Nick Bezates Nick Bezates owns Bezates construction in Oregon and runs an amazing instagram page that features two SPYDERCRANES that he owns. Nick is one of our most frequent Instagram users and tags us in posts showcasing his awesome jobs and uses for his cranes. Most of the time he uses his SPYDERCRANE to assist him with welding projects, but he does lifts in obscure places indoors and outdoors. He creates his photos by sharpening them and making them look like something that was hand drawn. He is definitely a huge SPYDERCRANE fan! Check out some of his posts, @bezatesn.

SPYDERCRANE Rebuilds History

SPYDERCRANE URW706 Helps with Renovations of a Historic Building When Brown-Glaws Contractors were awarded the contract to renovate the historic F.W. Wagener building in downtown Charleston SC, they knew the challenges that lay ahead. Project Manager Marc Eves said “the inability to close roads for long durations due to the dense urban environment of the surrounding area prevented the use of a standard crane.” Built in 1880, and designed by architect Richard P Southard, the Wagener-Ohlandt building is a pillar of the Charleston Historic District depicting Charleston’s transition from Romanesque architecture to the Victorian style. Originally built as a storefront, warehouse, and office space by accomplished entrepreneur Frederick W. Wagener, the building most recently served as a brewery and event space. However, faced with monumental [...]

Smiley Crane at PGA

Smiley Crane at the PGA Waste Management Phoenix Open 2020 This past year, Smiley Crane had the opportunity set up multiple event stands/monuments at the PGA Waste Management Open. In addition to building the grand stands that house lounges and viewing areas, we lifted a vintage helicopter from the Vietnam war that was donated as the viewing piece for the veteran tent. Due to the size of the event, the building process takes months to complete. For our part, the 80 ton was set up in October to build the massive 3 story grand stands. In January, Vince was flying large top pieces for the roof of the same exact structure. Also in January, the final helicopter lift was completed by George Latour. For a tight fit with precious [...]

Throwback Thursday: 30 Ton Jet Engine Set

30 Ton Crane Sets Jet Engine on Gulfstream G-III In 2013, Smiley Crane had the opportunity to take photos of a Gulfstream G-III engine replacement process, using the 30 ton Terex crane. The JT8D jet engine was hoisted onto the mount with the crane reaching in through the hanger doors. The engine weighs around 14,000 lbs and was hoisted with a spreader bar. With the assistance of the aviation mechanics, they were able to successfully attach the engine to the aircraft. This process is similar to what the SCAMP II does with the helicopter engines in the Army.  Another job well done by Smiley's!

300 Ton in Scottsdale

300 Ton Lift in Scottsdale Back in December, Smiley Crane performed a lift in a super tight space over in Scottsdale. We lifted a stone table, with a reach of over 250 feet over the hedge, meaning Jan, the operator, would be lifting the table blind. With the help of the guys on the ground using radio, the table was successfully able to be dropped into place with precise direction. The crane was set up on a driveway that took up the entire road. Trucks carrying all the crane equipment and counterweights were tightly set up on one side of the crane, and the other side had the supplies to build the table pieces. As you see in the video, the crane boom was almost fully extended [...]
