Meet the Team: James Nefzger

We’re thrilled to introduce James Nefzger to Team Smiley. James brings with him a wealth of experience and a passion for the industry that’s hard to match. He just started with the Smiley Crane Team but has been in the crane industry for about 20 years. James will be working closely with the Heavy Crane Team, ready to make his mark and contribute to our team’s success.

About James

When James isn’t busy with cranes, you’ll likely find him spending time with his family. With 30 years of marriage under his belt to his wife Stacey, who manages the household, James is a proud father of two grown daughters and five adorable grandkids—all of whom reside locally. James’s interests include hunting, camping, off-roading, woodworking (especially crafting oak whiskey barrels and grandkid chairs), and watching his grandkids play hockey, soccer, and gymnastics. He’s even gearing up for his first-ever elk hunting trip in Arizona, with plans for a camping adventure alongside his son-in-law and friend.

Industry Experience

James’s journey to Smiley Crane has been quite the adventure. Hailing from a small town of 900 people in North Dakota, James grew up on a farm and started formally working at the young age of 14. His early career took him across 31 states, painting highways, before he found his passion for cranes in 2005. He’s held various roles in the industry, including stints in the oil fields of North Dakota and Texas, before landing back in Phoenix with Southwest Industrial as Crane Division Manager. With experience ranging from sales and management to training and project coordination, James brings a diverse skill set to our team.

Why Smiley?

What drew James to Smiley Crane? It’s the organization of Team Smiley and the challenges of the crane industry that keep him engaged. He loves the puzzle of putting all the pieces together and the camaraderie among operators.

Off-Duty Fun

In his downtime, James enjoys hiking and embarking on adventures with his family. One of his favorite memories is a vacation to Havasu Falls hike in 2017 with his wife and family.

Theme Song

If James could choose a theme song, it would be “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne—a fitting choice for someone always on the move!

Goals

Professionally, James aims to continue educating and nurturing the next generation of crane operators. Personally, he wants to keep enjoying life’s adventures with his family.

We’re excited to have James as part of our team and can’t wait to see the positive impact he’ll make at Smiley Crane. Please join us in welcoming him aboard!
